One day, Shintarou and his friend Sakura pick up a wild fox that was wounded after being hit by a car. Shintarou takes care of the fox at his father's house and names it Momiji but they eventually abandon her in the wild, with bitterness....
A dozen years later, Momiji finds a human skull and follows a rite to acquire a human shape thanks to it although her fox ears and tail sometimes pop out. With her new body, she is resolved to go and meet Shintarou again with the only clue that he went to Tokyo, wanting to become a mangaka for the Champion magazine. She is helped by her Master, an otter youkai who can also take the shape of a beautiful woman and knows a lot more than her about the world.
Momiji finds Shintarou shortly after arriving in Tokyo but he now looks miserable. They follow him and soon see him attempting suicide by jumping off a bridge. Momiji stops him in time and they both embrace in joy, but the name Shintarou utters is Sakura's, not Momiji's. As it turns out, the skull Momiji found was Sakura's after she was taken in a landslide and disappeared, and so Momiji took her appearance.
Momiji wants Shintarou to call her by the name he gave her but ends up lying and hiding her real identity to Shintarou by pretending to be a Sakura who lost most of her memories.
How will Momiji adapt to her new lifestyle while keeping up the act? Will Shintarou ever know the truth about her? What is Shintarou's past?
